Jesus Christ

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no
one comes to the Father but through me."

Creation: Ever wondered what Christianity is all about? Not much to it, really. God created human beings for fellowship with Himself. He loved them and wanted to be loved by them, but He did not want them to be pre-programmed robots. So, He created them with the capacity to choose good (Him) or evil (not Him), and He gave them the freedom to make their own choice.

The Fall of Man: Of course, when given the choice, the people God created chose evil because doing wrong is more alluring, powerful and attractive than doing good. In making that choice back in the Garden of Eden (yes, there really was one), they became spiritually separated from God. Sort of like when people hurt you. It puts this distance between you and them that has to be bridged somehow. You don't really want to have much to do with them until they come to you and apologize and try to make things right. Maybe then you're willing to forget about what they did and move on.

Spiritual Death: Well, with God it's much more serious. Because we have all done a little wrong here and there, it is easier for us to understand and try to forget what they did than it is for God. Since God has never done any wrong, He can't just over look the wrong we do. It only takes one wrong to make somebody a wrongdoer, and everybody has done something wrong. As long as that distance remains between us and God, He can't be friends with us. With God, this problem simply has to be dealt with. In fact, if we don't deal with it before we die, we will have to suffer the terrible consequences of remaining separated from Him for all eternity. That separation is spiritual death, and it is the present condition of every person who has not been reconciled to God.

Reconciliation: Thing is, though, God wants to be in fellowship with us so much that He went to all the trouble to bridge the distance Himself. He really loves us. He came to the earth, took on the form of a man (whom we called Jesus), lived the life we should have lived (no wrong) and then offered His perfect life as a substitution for our imperfect life. It's the deal of the century, but it's not for everyone. It's only for the people who will actually believe that it really works that way. They have to accept what God did as sufficient to bridge that distance. They have to rely upon it, knowing that their eternity depends upon their relying on it. If they trust in their own good deeds or character, they are sunk. Our bodies will die, but out spirits will live on. How we spend our eternity is up to us.

So, what's a person to do? Have a change of heart about the life you have been living and be willing to turn it around (repentance). Admit to God that you are a wrongdoer and ask Him to forgive you (confession). Invite Him to come and live on the inside of you to help you live the way He wants you to (submission). Trust that when He offered His life for yours, that it was enough and that you don't need to try to add anything else to it (faith). You can talk to Him about the whole thing right now, right where you are sitting, and you can put things right with Him. He will listen to the voice of your heart and He will respond. That is what Christianity is all about. Getting back into the relationship God always intended us to have with Him. Not much to it, really.
